Chapter 2:

"Darnit!" A male cadet yells out with his back on the ground.

"Heh! you'll never win like that." Another laughs.

"This is kinda silly..." Lacey sighs twiddling a wooden knife in her hand as she leans her back against the wooden gate of a large field filled with cadets training in hand to hand combat. "Seriously, what good is this when it comes to titans?"

"Well the military police doesn't need a fleshing blade to take down a thief." Marie responds stretching her leg against the fence preparing to train.

"Yeah that's true... and If anything I can throw this at a titan's eye and make a quick get away." The blonde states waving the knife back and forth.

"Well that's one alternative." Marie agrees. Suddenly the sound of running horses is heard and several cadets stop their training and look up in surprise to see Commander Keith Shadis and Captain Erwin Smith of the Survey Corps.

"No way... look" A cadet whispers in surprise as the two come closer to the entrance of the gate.

"What's the commander doing here?" another cadet questions  those beside him.

"Something must have happened." Lacey states grimly looking towards the gate as their instructor walks up to the greet the two visitors. Marie however stays quiet as  she watches the three talk and suddenly turn their heads in her and Lacey's direction.

"Marie Ginter!" The instructor yells making Lacey look at her as well.

"Coming sir!" Marie responds.

"What's going on?" Lacey asks.

"I don't know."  Marie responds and begins walking and Lacey quickly follows.

"I didn't call you Chamberlain." The instructor states.

"All due respect sir Ginter is my training partner sir!"  Lacey states standing up right saluting over her heart.

"This matter doesn't involve you, find another partner to train with. Ginter follow the commander back to my office and await further instructions." The instructor informs her.

"Yes sir!" Marie salutes looking up to the commander and captain who nod and begin riding their horses in the other direction. Marie turns to a worried looking Lacey and forces and gentle smile. "I'll be okay, keep practicing."

"If you say so..." Lacey responds when suddenly the instructor places his hand on her shoulder while looking out into the field.

"You maggots keep training, Cadet Chamberlain will be reporting of your progress when I return! I expect to see tired bodies and sweat dripping from your clothes!" He calls out making the cadets groan. "You're in charge cadet." He turns to Lacey who's eyes light up with joy making him almost instantly regret his decision. "Let's go Ginter."

Marie nods and looks to Lacey who smiles and turns her attention to the field ready to order her fellow cadets to do god knows what. The raven haired maiden follows her instructor back to his cabin office where Shadis and Smith were both waiting, it wasn't until now that Marie could see the grim looks on their faces. Their sullen faces begin to make her nervous as the instructor takes a seat in his chair and ushers her to do the same in the seat across from him.

“Cadet Ginter, please sit.” He insists and Marie just that facing him worried for what is to come next. “There has been some unfortunate news.” He speaks and then turns to the Commander and Marie follows suit.

“Cadet Ginter... Marie...” He closes his eyes and takes a deep breath reaching into his chest pocket and pulls out the cut off emblem of a survey corp uniform jacket. “I deeply regret to inform you that your father Dr. Wong has passed.”

The world stops around the small girl as she feels her back run cold. She takes the small patch and lowers her head examining it with wide disbelieving eyes. Her father was dead? No that can't be right... He was skilled not only as a doctor but as a solider of the survey corp, she was going to learn so much from him once she join. He wasn't dead, it had to be a lie. She was going to join to survey corp and see his smiling face greeting her as she worked beside him in his footsteps. Her father, the only family she had left in this horrible titan filled world.

“Cadet Ginter.” The instructor calls out pulling her back into reality and she snaps her head back up to look at him, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. “This isn't the only reason why the commander came.”

“W-what , there's more?” Marie turns her face, what possibly could have happened.

“Your father's entire medical squad was wiped out.” Captain smith states and Marie looks at him and he momentarily gives her an apologetic look.

“They're gone? The entire squad?” She asks and he nods.

“This is why we came personally... Marie you grew up around the survey squad due to your father's involvement as our lead medical officer. Thus you learned many of his techniques and have a vast knowledge of not only his medical teachings, but as well to how our corp functions. Infact your father even allowed you to help treat the minor injures of our soldiers until you were old enough to begin your training here.” Shadis states. “You're being enlisted into the Survey Corp as of now.”

“Enlisted? But sir I haven't even had formal medical training yet, aren't there other medical officers or even doctors to turn to first?” She asks.

“None of which have worked or have the experience as you do with the survey corp. Please acknowledge this is a special case. You are the only cadet with the medical knowledge you possess, we don't have time to train a new team of medical officers with out your experience.” Erwin smith states.

“But I haven't even graduated yet, we just started ODM combat training.”

“And you will continue your training under the survey corp.” The instructor adds.

“But I....” Marie looses her words as her head becomes clouded with the sudden information. So much was happening and she was having trouble keeping everything straight. Her father was dead, his entire medical team was gone as well and now she was being personally asked to join to corp. The emotions were begining to tear at her and she wanted nothing more than she run out the door and think.

Suddenly a pair of hands fall of her shoulders and infront of her kneeling was Commander Shadis.

“Breath.”

“Wha-”

“Breath! That's an order!” He calls out making her flinch, slowly she takes a deep breath and looks back up to the commander who had resume standing. “You have a choice Marie, stay and graduate with your fellow cadets and choose another regiment, or join us and ridding the world of these damn titans and reclaim what is rightfully ours, what was rightfully your fathers.” He states and waits for the words to sink in with the young cadet.

“I...”

“We need an answer cadet! Are you with us or are you going to live behind the walls?”

“I... I'll join you.” Marie states standing up  with her fist over her arm. “I'll join the survey corp and continue serving as my father did!” Tears begin to fall down her cheeks. “I won't let you down sir.”

“Then welcome to the Survey Corp Medical Officer Ginter.” Commander Shadis salutes her followed by the instructor and Erwin.

“Go and collect your things cadet.” The instructor orders.

“Yes sir.” Marie nods and turns to leave before being stopped by the commander once again.

“You'll have time to grieve on the way to our head quarters.” He states softly.

“Yes sir.” Marie responds lowering her head and leaves the cabin.

“Marie!!!” Lacey cheers as she walks into the girl's cabin where she sees her raven haired friend packing up her sack of a few personally belongings. “Hey... what's going on?” She asks worried walking up to her.

“My dad died...” Marie tells her friend quietly making Lacey stop in her tracks.

“Oh Marie... I'm so sorry...” Lacey whispers walking up to her and gently gives her a hug and Marie falls into the hug. “Are you going home?” She asks curiously and feels Marie shake her head and pull away.

“No... well.. technically.” Marie sighs trying to hold back tears.

“What do you mean technically?” Lacey asks raising an eyebrow.

“I... haven't told you everything.” Marie looks to her friend and sits on the bed and Lacey does the same. “I've been asked to join the survey corp.”

“What?! Really?!” Lacey's eyes grow wide. “How?! WHY?!”

“I need to start from the beginning...” Marie starts and looks towards the window. “My father joined the survey corp long before I was born leaving my mother and I out side of a small village in the south near wall Maria. When she passed away my father had trouble finding someone to look after me and since he was the lead medical officer he was given special permission to bring me to the head quarters one days he had to work on his patients. That's when I saw it as a child... the destruction that a titan could do to people, and they were the lucky ones... I probably shouldn't have been allowed to be there at all. Seeing those things can traumatize a child, it gave me nightmares. That was until I talked to them, the soldiers. These people who had seen the worst and the depression falling over their faces of how cruel the world is, yet they would smile at me. I got to know them, everyone of them different with stories of their lives and things they've seen and done. My father told me he noticed a difference too, that seeing me helped remind them what they were fighting for and it was important that I keep visiting them. I got older my father begin teaching me basic at hand to hand combat and helping with the patients, little things like changing bandages or fluffing pillows. But that more I leaned the more I realized I wanted to help these people I had come to love. That's why I enlisted... so I could continue helping them.”

“But why now? You haven't even graduated.” Lacey asks.

“Because not only did my father die... but his whole medical squad is gone too. That's why the Commander came here.” Marie sighs. “Now it's my turn to help.”

“Well that's not fair!” Lacey yells out.

“L-Lacey!?” Marie looks up to her friend wide eyed.

“It's like pushing a new born bird out of the nest before it's ready to fly! You haven't even grieved yet! It's just cruel!” Lacey yells out.

“Lacey we're soldiers, we don't get to decide that...”

“Well I am, it's not fair to you!” Lacey says pulling her into a hug. “We said we would do this together...”

“Lacey...” Marie hugs her friend back. There was a knock on the door and both girls turn their heads to see Erwin standing at the door. Marie tries to pull away put Lacey refuses to let go.

“Cadet Ginter...” He begins.

“What? You not going to let your say goodbye to a friend too?” Lacey pouts not letting go.

“I'll be just a moment.” Marie informs him and he nods turning back out the door.

“My sweet little baby bird is being taken away by big burly men.” Lacey pouts even more as Marie prys herself away.

“I know both the commander and captain personally, i'll be okay.” Marie sighs.

“You better be.” Lacey says folding her arms.

“Well. I guess this is good bye for now.” Marie says giving her friend a saddened smile.

“Wait.” Lacey suddenly tells her and begins digging under her bunk making Marie both curious and confused. “Here!” The blonde smiles holding up two chained necklaces, each had a pendant of one half of the survey corp emblem, one was a white wing the other blue.

“What are these?” Marie asks as Lacey hands her the blue winged necklace.

“I asked my dad to make these, the finally got here yesterday. I was planning on giving it to you when we both joined the survey corp.” Lacey informs her. “But now it's a promise.”

“A promise?”

“When we both wear these it's a promise that'll join up with you as soon as possible and a promise that you stay alive until I can. No matter what, we'll be in the corp together.” Lacey smiles.

“Lacey...” Marie begins.

“Promise me!” Lacey glares. “It's already going to be boring around here with out you.”

“Alright, I promise.”
